Some standouts in H-Town’s plentiful taco scene

In the mood for a taco? If you’re anywhere near Houston, there’s a place nearby. However, Houston is home to many foodies and taco connoisseurs alike, and we all know that one taco is not always equal to another. Whether you’re a local or just visiting the area, don’t miss out on some of the best tacos in the United States.

We’ve put together a few highlights of Houston’s taco scene -- try one, or try them all!

Late-Night Eats Vibe: El Taconazo

El Taconazo might be the most famous taco truck in the city. Unlike some of the trendier, fusion Tex Mex spots, this taco truck goes back to the originals—high quality ingredients and authentic recipes. This taco truck is often open late at night, so you might even see lines as late as 2am. Don’t worry—it’s worth it!

When ordering, don’t miss out on ordering your tacos “con queso Oaxaca” to add some delicious, melted cheese on top. Add in some hot, green salsa and you can’t go wrong!

Classy Taco Vibes: El Topo

El Topo is another popular taco spot and has even been highlighted in Texas Monthly Magazine. El Topo is a trendy restaurant known for its well decorated and inviting space. They pay attention to the details all the way down to their flatware, so it’s a perfect spot to go out with your favorite people and enjoy an intimate and classy experience.

When you check them out, try the Al Pastor taco. Many say it’s the best they’ve ever had! If you love pineapple, add that into your Al Pastor taco for a sweet and spicy flavor combination. To cap off the meal with a drink, their Agua Fresca Mimosas, pineapple and lime, will not disappoint!

After-Work Destination Vibes: Cuchara

Cuchara is an authentic Mexican restaurant located in midtown. When you walk in, you will be greeted by the colors of Mexico, a warm and welcoming staff, and traditional music designed to give diners the best experience. Well known for their fun atmosphere, many Houston locals make them a go-to spot for after-work tacos and chats with friends!

In addition to the authentic atmosphere, you can’t beat the flavors. The dishes are flavored with seasoning straight from Mexico and people can’t get enough. There is often a line, but never fear, the locals say the line moves fast!

Popular & Vegan Vibes: Verdine

Vegan taco-lovers, your time is now! Verdine is a trendy vegan restaurant located in a cute area called the Heights Waterworks. They serve a variety of vegan takes on traditional classics, but the tacos are hailed as one of the best menu choices.

The food is fresh, the staff is friendly, and you’ll enjoy lots of natural sunlight with the huge windows as you lounge in hip booth seating. The rave reviews don’t lie; this new spot is a hit that is sure to keep growing in popularity over the next few years.

Affordable Brunch Vibes: Brothers Taco House

Don’t wait to try this place, it has some of the most fun decor and tacos in town! Despite its recognition among the Houston community, the prices have stayed affordable. It’s only open until 3 p.m., so it’s perfect for brunch or an early lunch.

If you go on the weekend, check out the weekend-only barbacoa taco. Barbacoa is an authentic Mexican meat seasoned with chilies and spices and then slow roasted to perfection. Top with your favorite ingredients (we love salsa, avocado, and pickled red onion) and enjoy!

BBQ Vibes: The Pit Room

The Pit Room is known for its delicious barbeque, so you can probably guess what type of tacos are found here. The brisket is known for being tender, juicy, and the best people have ever had!

This restaurant serves up their food cafeteria style, and there is lots of outdoor seating to enjoy the warm Texas sun while you eat. To make the most of your Pit Room experience, try your chicken, brisket, or pulled pork tacos with a side of elote!

Treated like Family Vibes: La Calle Tacos and Tortas

This taqueria is known for being vibrant and funky. There’s often loud music playing, and you’ll see people from all over flock for some of the best tacos in town. These tacos are said to have some kick to them, so be sure you’re ready for some spice. The meat is flavorful, and the owner treats all diners like family, so you can’t go wrong with this dining experience.

If you are looking for a pairing with your taco, try the birria dip and a margarita! The drinks are strong, so you might find yourself dancing to the popping tune after a few. For those who are undecided about what taco to try, don’t miss out on the sampler plate. You can enjoy it with friends while making the most of their lovely outdoor seating.
