Co Nam
Husband-and-wife team Trung Nguyen and executive chef Vy Lieou (also of Xyclo on Piedmont Avenue) have expanded the original Nob Hill location of Co Nam to a second location in Oakland. The Temescal location is a quán nhậu, which is best likened to a Vietnamese izakaya or gastropub where friends can hang out and relax over drinks and good food. The menu features three traditional Vietnamese items: bánh bột lọc (pork and shrimp dumplings), nem nướng (pork sausages), and bò lá lốt (beef wrapped in betel leaf), all of which are well-executed and ideal for sharing. The menu isn’t strictly Vietnamese, though — the fried wicked buns are a deep-fried version of Chinese steamed buns, stuffed with five-spice chicken thighs and Vietnamese-style pickled carrots and daikon. Traditional yet hard-to-find entrées like cá kho (fish in caramelized rock sugar sauce) and original creations like a giant river prawn with handmade squid ink noodles round out the menu.

Duende Restaurant
This ritzy Spanish restaurant from former Oliveto chef Paul Canales is nothing if not ambitious: a 4,000-square-foot multi-use space that includes a high-end coffee shop, a wine and olive-oil retailer, an art gallery, and a performance venue for experimental jazz. It’s a stylish place, with food that befits the grand, vibrant setting. Canales takes traditional Spanish and Basque small plates as a jumping-off point but embellishes them with global, Californian, and modern touches: A salad of frisée and fried baby squid is crowned with a sous vide egg; a pork-trotter-and-cheek fritter is served over a French-tasting mustard sauce. The arroz negro (topped — California-style — with local, seasonal seafood) is worth the splurge.

This handsome, high-ceilinged Uptown restaurant is ostensibly a Cal-Italian wood-fired pizza spot, though the pizza turns out to be just a small part of the menu. The cooking style is “Italian cuisine with California ingredients,” and dishes are nearly 100-percent locally sourced. The most exciting part of the menu, and the thing that sets Parlour apart from the local Cal-Italian crowd, is the kitchen’s use of whole animals, whose offal cuts are spun off into an array of charcuterie and intriguing appetizers: porchetta di testa (a croquette made from the meat picked off a slow-cooked pig’s head), for instance, or pastrami-spiced beef tongue. As for Parlour’s pizza, it gets baked about a minute in the 800-degree wood oven, and features a slightly puffier, chewier crust than you’d get on a more traditional Neapolitan pie.

There are burritos, black bean burgers, four kinds of pasta dishes, breakfast sandwiches, and burritos, and if you just want a snack, their flavor-forward, fried empanadas are stuffed with house walnut chorizo, chedda, and mozz cheeze, and are quite a crowd favorite.
