Del Popolo
If you’ve got eyes for pies, you’ll want to make a beeline to this chic and simple Italian hot spot. The open space is centered around a big, blazing oven and crowds arrive early to score every last no-reservations seat. Del Popolo may have gotten its start as a food truck, but one bite of their wood-fired pizzas and it’s clear how it earned its address. Chewy, blistered and deliciously caramelized, the crusts arrive laden with toppings both traditional (mozzarella, crushed tomato and basil) and California cool (roasted winter squash, mascarpone, spring onions). Don’t sleep on the antipasti either, since the starters are first-rate. The lightly charred carrots set atop house-made yogurt and garnished with crispy red quinoa are dizzyingly delicious.

The Morris
After working at a number of SF’s top restaurants, veteran sommelier Paul Einbund has settled down at this neighborhood charmer in the Mission, named for his father. Unsurprisingly, The Morris boasts a selection of wine (displayed in a handsome glass cellar), along with top-notch cocktails and a sophisticated yet highly craveable comfort-food menu. Quell your hunger with slices of Tartine country loaf-baked just down the street-as you peruse the menu, which offers appealing bites both small (pork cracklins with honey and Aleppo pepper) and large (charred broccolini with succulent grilled squid in chili-lime dressing). Be sure to also sample their signature smoked duck. Brined for two days and aged for four, it is a smoky, tender and meaty marvel.

Curio Bar
Curio is a bar and restaurant that honors all things unconventional. Located next to The Chapel, the Mission’s most prominent performance venue, the space brings together some of life’s greatest pleasures – well-crafted cocktails, delicious food, and live music. Chef Mario Tolentino’s regional American menu features shareable low country classics, prepared with Californian farm-to-table values. At the heart of Curio is the bar, where seasoned mixologist, Darren Crawford, creates unique, culturally-infused cocktails. The eclectic space draws inspiration from the building’s past as a mortuary, exploring the mysterious themes of life and time.

Flour + Water
As the name implies, two ingredients create a world of possibilities at this always-packed Mission hot spot. Neapolitan pizzas and handmade pastas (like al dente garganelli with whole-grain mustard and braised pork) will have you sighing after each bite, and a selection of more traditional mains (such as seared duck breast with chanterelles and pecorino-dusted charred Brussels sprouts) score every bit as big as the noodles and pies. Laid-back service, up-to-the-moment music and a buzzy, effervescent vibe make flour + water the epitome of California cool. Throw in a glass of their refined Italian wine, along with an alluring dessert like the salted caramel apple tart, and you can see why getting a table here is well worth the challenge.

Nopalito
“Elevated Mexican food” is the lure at these Nopa spin-offs where the “organic-driven” menu wins kudos from its “hipster and foodie” fans (it’s decidedly “not your rice-and-beans crowd”); “reasonable” tabs and a “major coolness” factor make the “no-reservations” policy easier to tolerate.
