A Universal University Eating Guide

No two people will have the same college experience, but I think there’s one thing on which we can all agree — all through undergrad, we were hungry. My alma mater, SFSU, had a lot of wonderful qualities, but consistently delicious and affordable food wasn’t always one of them. Thankfully the surrounding neighborhood was bountiful with quality eats you could reach on foot, even with your textbooks weighing you down.

No matter your palate or budget, here are some of the best munchies around campus to get you through those pesky prerequisites, or celebrate acing that midterm.

Dinosaurs

It’s hard to say exactly how long the banh mi wizards at Dinosaurs have been around, but with four locations across the city and Pacifica, they’re not going anywhere. Their sandwiches are always fresh, under $10, and pair fabulously with any of their unique drink offerings.

Recommend: The Crispy Tofu sandwich, and the Watermelon Litchi smoothie to wash it down

The Market at Parkmerced

If you’re tired of the selection at Trader Joe’s, or just want to spend your weekends supporting local businesses, consider a lunch date at The Market (formerly “Picnic in the Park”). Every weekend they host a farmer’s market of local food vendors, youth classes and live music to keep your pockets lines and tummies full.

Sakesan Sushi & Robata

Ok, now this one’s a bit of a splurge. You should never skimp on your seafood, but If you must, head over to Sakesan Sushi & Robata during one of their two daily happy hours for deals on drinks and $1 oysters. Oh, and did I mention there’s a discount for the karaoke room?

Recommend: The extra-spicy Gambler roll, and of course, the oysters.

Little Original Joe's

A meal at the Original Joe’s restaurant might not fit into a student budget, but this West Portal outpost is too teeming with deliciousness to walk by. In addition to their divine pasta and pizzas, LOJ (as it's called in shorthand) also has brunch salads and sandwiches that are well worth the walk.

Recommend: Prosciutto caprese sandwich, the in-house ravioli

Flight Dispensary

There’s no food to be found here, unless it’s medicated. If you’re feeling uninspired, or maybe had a little too much fun the night before, the Flight Dispensary team can find you the perfect remedy to bounce back and make it to your morning class.

Recommend: Anything, really!
