Nourish your neighbors, volunteer with this old-school nonprofit
Food Runners started more than three decades ago when an owner of a culinary school refused to waste food made by her student chefs. Soon that owner, Mary Risley, expanded to collecting excess food from grocery stores and restaurants, then transforming those donated products into hot meals for neighbors in need. Today this old-school nonprofit collects food donations, cooks, packs and delivers around 3,000 daily meals to shelters, soup kitchens, assisted living facilities and other residences across San Francisco. Volunteers are the secret ingredient.
