Sandy shores, vibrant art, salty air, and delicious food. Open your eyes, and you’re on the streets of La Jolla by the Sea in California. This energized community is just waiting for you to explore it. However, with so many options, it can be hard to know where to start. That’s where Vibemap came in.

We helped La Jolla by the Sea reimagine their online presence so visitors and locals alike had an easy-to-use, one-stop shop to help them plan their visit. With category-specific maps and an improved user interface, Vibemap elevated the La Jolla by the Sea website, while keeping its iconic branding, to lead guided discovery. This journal breaks down exactly how we did that, and how it can help your community, too.

What we built

Vibemap created three actionable answers to “How do we create guided discovery?” Let’s dive deeper into them below.

1. Category-specific maps

Perhaps the most important element of this project was the category-specific maps. For La Jolla, we created a series of these maps that each highlighted a particular slice of the neighborhood. They each reflect how people naturally explore places, such as:

  • Dining and restaurants
  • Shopping and local boutiques
  • Wellness and self-care experiences
  • Outdoor recreation
  • Arts and cultural spaces

Someone planning dinner in La Jolla can explore a map dedicated to restaurants and cafés. A visitor interested in wellness can browse studios, spas, and other health-focused experiences. This structure accomplishes two important goals: it reduces cognitive overload and makes each category strong enough to stand on its own. Each map serves as an easy-to-understand, focused guide to a particular aspect of La Jolla life.

2. Map view and list view

People don’t all explore a new place in the same way. So, our tools should be different. Some folks prefer to see the details. They want to see where things are located and how close they are to each other. On the other hand, some folks like to read and process information. They want to absorb descriptions, look at photos, and scan lists before deciding where to go. To support both behaviors, Vibemap created two complementary viewing modes: map view and list view.

The map view offers a simple visual overview of the neighborhood. This view is especially useful when someone is already in the area and wants to quickly find something that is a quick walk away. Alternatively, the list view lets users scroll through places, read descriptions, and explore the nitty-gritty details about each location before heading out. Ultimately, serving visitors with these two distinct options encourages more people to get outside and explore the community.

3. Branded to feel like La Jolla

At the end of the day, you want your website to honestly reflect your community. For La Jolla by the Sea, we made sure to keep their identity intact. The website should feel like a natural extension of the neighborhood, not just a random website. In all our work on this project, we designed the maps so that they visually align with La Jolla’s branding, aesthetic, and, of course, vibes.

This consistency matters more than it might seem. When our online tools reflect the character of a place, they build trust and familiarity for users. Visitors feel like they are engaging directly with the destination rather than with a random third-party platform. In other words, the maps don’t just display La Jolla, but rather, they feel like part of La Jolla.

 Why is this important work?

All of this sounds well and good. But why does it matter? We take on projects that make a real, tangible impact on a community. The La Jolla by the Sea project is no different. Here’s how our services showed up in real life.

Supporting local businesses in a more equitable way

It’s no secret that money buys advertising. The world favors big businesses with large budgets. However, our curated maps help level the playing field. When we highlight a wider range of businesses on these maps, the platform gives locally owned businesses an opportunity to be discovered.

Help people discover the real La Jolla by the Sea

Sure, there are the popular “must-see” spots of La Jolla. But there’s so much more when you dig deeper. Our services help visitors and locals alike dive deeper and see the real La Jolla.

Strengthen community pride

For our locals, we want them to be proud of where they’re from. Our product helps folks living in the community to dive deeper and discover places they otherwise wouldn’t have realized were right in their own backyard. Residents see their community represented with care, and visitors gain a deeper understanding of the community.

Creating something that lasts

Finally, our systems are designed to last. Rather than being a temporary marketing campaign, the Vibemap platform functions as an ongoing digital infrastructure. It can evolve as businesses change, events grow, and the community continues to develop. Your story doesn’t end with a marketing campaign; it expands year after year.

Final thoughts

La Jolla by the Sea is a place full of energy, creativity, and discovery. Our goal with this project was simple: build digital tools that reflect that same spirit. By creating category-specific maps, offering both map and list views, and designing everything to align with La Jolla’s brand, Vibemap helped turn the website into a true discovery platform. Today, visitors can explore the community in a way that feels intuitive, curated, and connected to the place itself.
