The Pacific Northwest is a trailblazer and trend-setter when it comes to beverages. From the craft beer boom that exploded here in the ‘90s and 2000s, to the dawn of “third wave coffee” sparked by brands like Stumptown, we’re serious about our drinks.
This Northeast Portland tour of beloved bevs sheds light on lesser known, hidden gem spots that we think are excellent, and adds a few surprises (and bites) along the way.
Guilder
Guilder has a passionate community of regulars and devoted fans, and when you swing by you’ll see why. Juniors, the micro-roastery arm of the café, is raising awareness about the problems facing coffee farmers and the industry, with their Ask Me About The Cost of Production campaign. (The short of it: we should all be paying more for our coffee.) Guilder gets its name from The Princess Bride, and references to the classic film can be found on the menu and artwork scattered around the space. Get an Americano or a Miracle Pill, their seasonally changing latte featuring house-made flavors.
Happy Day Juice Co.
When you want to give your body a healthy reset with fruits and veggies, swing by Happy Day Juice. This woman-owned juice shop on NE Fremont specializes in small-batch, cold-pressed juice, sustainably bottled in glass. If you’re looking for something more substantial, they also make smoothies, açai bowls, waffles, and savory toasts.
Baerlic Brewing at the Barley Pod
Baerlic Brewing is an independent brewery that became a fast favorite around town for its delicious and fresh beer, nice design sensibility, and easy-going vibe. Hopefully when you’re ready for a pint, you’re also craving lunch, because both of their locations come with fantastic food options. The brewery and HQ in Southeast is paired with Ranch Pizza, which serves Detroit-style slices right inside the brewery. Over in Northeast, The Barley Pod is a cart pod with 10+ options, and is kid, dog, and group-friendly.
1856 Bottle Shop
This unassuming spot on the corner of Northeast 15th and Prescott was opened by a pair of friends who are passionate about beverages. 1856 Bottle Shop keeps a curated selection of wine, beer, cider, vermouth, and sake in stock, and their team is incredibly approachable and friendly. It’s a go-to spot for picking up a bottle on your way to a dinner, and you can stop and have a drink there too, cozying up to their bar or taking in afternoon sun on their new outdoor patio.
Wonderly
This cocktail bar will wow you with its chic but welcoming interior, thoughtfully crafted drinks, and small but mighty food menu. Wonderly boasts a wine list composed of all female winemakers, many of them from right here in Oregon. Their cocktails are fresh takes on beloved classics—think a Greyhound with a chili salt rim and a margarita made with pineapple-habanero shrub.
