Fall is upon us, but a summer state of mind is still here. Evidence: All the fantastic water spots you can find around Oakland. Looking for a swim? To move from the kiddie pool to the lap lanes, you’ll have to put in the porpoise training. Also having swim skills is a suggested survival skill for all ages. Just want to soak in a waterside vibe? Nothing beats a big body of water. So whether you’re ready to wade in, or just looking for a lake picnic, here are watery places around the Town you should visit.

East Oakland Sports Center

Swimming, tennis, state of the art gymnasium, what more could you ask for in a sports center? East Oakland Sports Center houses free weights, personal training services, cardio equipment and much more! This 3,600 fitness center also offers martial arts classes, as well as instructed gymnastics courses. The East Oakland Sports Center has a 9,000 square foot indoor pool park featuring a lazy river, activity pools, white water slide, as well as a two lane lap area, so it’s perfect for the whole family.

Lake Merritt

Anytime of any day, the Lake Merritt neighborhood is one of the most lively places in Oakland.  Whether you’re by Lakeshore or Downtown, you’re guaranteed to find something that matches your vibe. Come sunbathe around one of the country’s largest saltwater lakes--home to wildlife, garden and a children’s park. But it’s the people watching (and dining around Lake Merritt) that takes this experience to the next level.

DeFermery Swimming Pool (closed until 2022)

Enjoy a swim day at the DeFermery Park Swimming pool! It’s located directly next to Town Park Skate Park, and just diagonal from the baseball diamond, making it an extremely convenient recreation activity. Whether you’re having a pool bash or a simple swim day, this swimming center has got it all covered. Stop by before summer ends and enjoy your swim! 

Oakland Marinas

Shop, eat, relax, whatever your heart desires. Oakland Marinas offer a unique space to indulge in the beauty of the East Bay. The Oakland Marinas consist of three docks making it a fantastic option for those who appreciate variety.  Bring a blanket and lay out on a grassy patch, or perhaps you yourself participate in boating, make the Almar Family Docks your go to.
