Known as the Harlem of the West, West Oakland is a residential neighborhood of Oakland with strong African American roots known for its Bluesy activist history — Billie Holiday and Big Mama Thornton are only two examples of those who performed along 7th Street. The waterfront neighborhood across the bay from San Francisco’s center is undergoing growth and provides one of the best views of the city’s skyline. It’s known to be easily accessible by BART and the sports fields and community spaces in Lowell Park.
